Lime Q & A: InfoRelational interviews?

Time for a new term

Categories: Lime Connect Q & A: Your Questions. Our Answers.

(I am taking a break from our series on Etiquette to address the following question.)

"How do I stand out in an informational interview?" is a question I heard this week from one of our Network inforelationalmembers. First of all, let's be honest, the term "informational interview" is a bit lacking.  While these conversations are an opportunity to get information and help you understand career paths, they can also be powerful door openers and network builders. So moving forward I suggest we use a new term: "InfoRelational Interviews."

Lime Q & A: Emailing, to-dos and not to-dos?

Email etiquette

Categories: Lime Connect Q & A: Your Questions. Our Answers.

(This is part 2 in a series on professional etiqutte)

As I mentioned in a past blog post on presenting, a person forms an impression of you within the first 30 seconds of meeting email etiquetteyou.  While studies show that 93% of that impression is formed from your non-verbal cues (body language, vocal tone), email doesn’t reveal these cues. So what becomes most important while emailing is choice of words, ease of read, and following proper protocol.

Here are a few things to keep in mind, while emailing, whether you are requesting to be considered for a position, following up after an informational or networking conversation, or just initiating a professional relationship.

Lime Q & A: What is appropriate to order for dinner?

And other dining etiquette tips

Categories: Lime Connect Q & A: Your Questions. Our Answers.

(part one in a three-part series on professional etiquette)

I just got back from our annual Lime Fellowship Symposium in NYC. As I do every year, I left feeling inspired by the courage, talent, and determination of these rising juniors. We covered many aspects of navigating the recruiting process including networking, resumes, and interviewing. We also spent time discussing disability and leadership and ways to navigate disability at school, work and beyond.

Interview lunchMost of the sessions went pretty deep and I hope to share reflections on them in the coming weeks. But for today, I'd like to share some information on dining etiquette. A question that I hear from time to time and that is so relevant now as folks start to have informational lunches, attend networking receptions, and even interview over a meal. We were so lucky to have Barbara Hewitt the Senior Associate Director at UPenn's Career Services talking to the Fellows about networking and dining etiquette. I hope to have her guest blog with us in the future. In the meantime, below is some information from Virginia Tech's Career Services on dining etiquette that I edited a bit for this particular audience.
