A glimpse into life at TD, through the eyes of Lime Connect Network member and TD Scholar, Bowen Lin...
Bowen Lin is a busy man these days.
The fourth-year McMaster student from Hamilton is juggling his commerce studies, while also setting the stage for a career at TD Bank Group, thanks in part to his experience with Lime Connect Canada.
He's scheduled to graduate in January, then, in August, he'll be starting full-time in the Operations Leadership Associate Program with TD Securities. The two-year rotational program is intense and involves three different roles within the business - Officer, Analyst and Team Lead.
Lin found out about Lime Connect Canada in September 2011 at a school event, and it has been instrumental in accelerating his post-university options.
Lime Connect helped connect Lin to an opportunity with TD, where he started in retail banking with TD Canada Trust in Hamilton in spring 2013. During the second quarter, Lin finished top three in the district in sales. He led the branch in total revenue, pace, and referrals during his first year and was recently named Branch MVP for Q4.
Shortly after that, this past May, Lin was the recipient of the TDS /Lime Scholarship, which includes an internship. He excelled in that time, which earned him a spot in the rotation program he begins next summer.
"My journey with TD has been an exceptional trip over the past two years," says Lin. "The company has offered me much more than just a place to work, but a place to develop both personally and professionally. From opportunities to work with our customers to handling challenging industry problems, TD truly lets you challenge yourself to grow and learn."
Lin has also found his stride when it comes to giving back to the community. In 2012, he ran in Hamilton's Around the Bay Race, North America's oldest road race, to help raise money for the St. Joseph's Healthcare. He and his running mates raised more than $10,000.
"Volunteering in the community is something that I truly value, and was one of the major reasons why I chose to join TD," says Lin. "From local community events to major campaigns such as our Children's Miracle Network or Underwriting Hope shows, it is great to be part of the incredible effort TD has put into diverse communities in Canada and the U.S."
Lin is also paying it forward to the organization that helped him chart the first stage of his career. He began volunteering with Lime Connect Canada in spring 2013 and helped create and implement the organization's new Lime Ambassador Program.
As part of being an Ambassador, Lin makes presentations to students. To help polish his speaking skills, he's enrolled in Toastmasters, the internationally renowned public speaking club, and is taking some leadership development courses to improve his management skills.
For those who are just starting out in their careers, Lin's advice sounds like that of a seasoned pro.
"Building strong relationships is so important, whether it's with customers or co-workers or business partners," he says. "Also, take opportunities. Take some risks and step out of your comfort zone. Even if it doesn't work out, you still learn a lot."
