Over the last four years working on Google's internship programs, I've learned a lot about what it takes to be successful and have an impact in a short period of time. The tips below have been collected from former interns, intern managers, and intern program managers at Google and should be useful no matter where you intern this summer!

If you don't know, ask. As an intern, you are not expected to know everything on day one. Your team knows this and will expect you to ask questions. Be resourceful in searching for the answer, but don't be afraid to ask questions.

A network is one of your best resources. One of Google's strengths lies in Googlers' willingness to help, and the depth of their experience and knowledge. Build meaningful relationships with people you meet because you never know whose help you may need on your next project, and even what help you might be able to contribute to their next project .

Communicate clearly and often. Do your best to keep stakeholders aware of your progress on projects. This will help you stay on track and move quickly, incorporate feedback and new ideas, and ultimately ensure your projects have a big impact.

Be flexible. Before your internship is over, something unexpected will happen. It could be that your project takes a surprising direction, or that you receive some tough feedback. Your ability to overcome this, learn something from it, and move forward with confidence will be crucial to your success.

And finally, take into consideration one of the most underestimated pieces of advice: be enthusiastic! Smile, laugh, make friends, and enjoy the perks of your summer experience.

If you don't have a formal summer internship lined up for this summer, you can still take advantage of your free time. Consider learning something new that will benefit you in the long term, like learning to code, or becoming certified in Google AdWords. You can also explore career options through job shadowing.

At Google, we encourage our employees and interns to do cool things that matter. You can stay up to date on opportunities and all the cool things students are doing with us through the Google Student Blog. But wherever you are, we encourage you to use this summer as a chance to make an impact!
