In the Limelight: 2018 Lime Connect Fellow Tyler Ball
What sparked your interest in applying for the Lime Connect Fellowship Program?
I believe that people are often scared or intimidated to speak about their disabilities. For me, this was especially true because my disability is invisible. When I initially heard about the Fellowship Program through my school’s office of disability services, I learned more about the benefits and knew I had to apply!
What was your experience like at the Fellows Symposium?
My experience at the symposium was great! I definitely did not expect to bond with everyone in the way that I did. At first, I was definitely a bit scared of opening up with the other Fellows, but everyone was truly there to help and support each other. By the time the symposium was over, I realized that I had 24 friends that I could trust and rely on in the future and that feeling was awesome.
What did you take away from your experience?
In the past, I’ve always been really scared of my disability. I thought all it could do was harm me, and I definitely did not ever want to disclose. The Lime Fellowship program helped me realize that my disability is actually a strength, not a weakness, and this knowledge has helped change my outlook completely. During the symposium, being surrounded by 24 other successful students with disabilities helped motivate me to achieve more than I ever thought possible, and none of this would have happened without the help of Lime.
What has your experience with Lime Connect been like post-symposium?
My experience has been great post-symposium. Lime Connect has really been dedicated to helping me find success, whether it's through coaching calls to help me plan for my future, or by hosting networking sessions with their incredible partners. I would not be at this point in my professional career without the guidance of Lime.
What do you have coming up this year?
I recently interviewed and accepted an offer for a summer analyst position at Lime Connect's partner, Goldman Sachs. I could not be more excited to continue advocating for the disability talent space in the future!
What advice would you give potential Fellows on why they should apply for the Fellowship Program?
I know that applying for a program related to your disability can feel a little intimidating – at least, it was for me. Though it may feel daunting, you won’t find the knowledge, support, and close relationships developed through the Lime Connect Fellowship Program anywhere else. Lime Connect showed me that I can achieve anything with my disability, and I know that it can do that for others too. Apply, apply, apply! You won’t regret it!
