Emma Woerle is a Lime Network member and recipient of the inaugural Lime Connect Pathways Scholarship. She is a first-year student at the Rochester Institute of Technology where she is studying International and Global Studies and Advertising and Public Relations.
Fun Fact: As I am hard of hearing in my right ear, I am a cross-registered student with the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) - which is hosted at RIT - as well as RIT.
Why did you decide to apply for the Lime Connect Pathways Scholarship?
I decided to apply because I was happy to see a scholarship specifically for students with a disability. There really aren’t many scholarships out there for students like us. Having an organization with a mission to help people with disabilities made me feel seen. It's super important that students with disabilities get help and are supported.
This scholarship has truly helped to lift some of the financial burdens off of my family’s shoulders. I was able to pay for books and housing costs, and it will help me come out of college with no debt. College has been a fun experience so far because there are so many opportunities to get involved now and meet new people!
What are your career aspirations after college?
I would love to work for an international non-profit or NGO as their public relations specialist. Working at the United Nations would be a dream come true!
What are you looking forward to as a new Lime Network member?
I am especially excited about the opportunity to build relationships with Lime Connect's partners and other Lime Network members. Networking is so important in any career field and I believe these relationships could offer valuable insight, connections and career opportunities.
What advice or thoughts would you give to someone thinking of applying for the scholarship?
Just be yourself in the application. They want to get to know you! You do not have a lot of space to tell them about yourself, so make sure you are to the point, but honest. Having a disability is something to embrace and be proud of, and Lime Connect knows this, so do not be shy to include details about your disability.
Do you have a message for the Lime Connect Century Ride riders and fundraisers who helped fund the Pathways Scholarship?
Thank you so much for helping to provide this generous scholarship. It is a tremendous help for my family in paying for my education. I am honored to have been selected as a recipient, and I will use the opportunities from Lime Connect to make a difference in my community.
